Gran Canaria is often called a continent in miniature, and an hour's drive explains why. The south is sunny and dry, with the great dunes of Maspalomas and a string of resorts; the centre rises to pine forests, ravines and volcanic monoliths; the north is green, with old towns and banana plantations; and the capital, Las Palmas, is a real city with a historic quarter and one of Europe's best urban beaches.
This guide brings together what you need to plan your trip in 2026: the essential experiences, what tours cost, the new reservation for Roque Nublo, where to stay and how to get around. For a ready-made plan, see our 3 days and 5 days in Gran Canaria itineraries, and for quieter corners our Gran Canaria hidden gems.

The Essential Gran Canaria Experiences
I. Maspalomas Dunes
Between Playa del Inglés and the Maspalomas lighthouse, a protected sea of sand runs down to the Atlantic. The Maspalomas Dunes Special Nature Reserve is free and open at all times, but visitors must stay on the marked paths, and walking off them can be fined. Despite the popular story, the sand isn't from the Sahara: it's made mostly of fragments of shells, shaped by the wind over thousands of years. Come at sunrise or in the last two hours before sunset, when the light is soft and the sand cooler, and finish by the lagoon of La Charca and the lighthouse.
Camel rides and guided e-bike or e-scooter tours are paid extras. See our Maspalomas dunes guide for the routes and rules.
II. Roque Nublo and the Tejeda Highlands
In the centre of the island, the volcanic monolith of Roque Nublo rises above pine forest and the deep Tejeda caldera. The S-70 trail from the Degollada de La Goleta is short — around 1.5 kilometres each way on a well-made path — but access is now regulated: between 09:00 and 17:00 you need a free reservation on reservasroquenublo.com, with a QR code checked at the entrance. The trailhead car park is closed to private cars, so park in Tejeda or at Cruz de los Llanos and take the Global line 18 shuttle, or walk in. Nearby, the village of Tejeda and the cave houses of Artenara make a perfect half-day.
It's often much cooler and windier than on the coast, so bring layers. Our Roque Nublo guide has the details.
III. Puerto de Mogán
On the south-west coast, Puerto de Mogán is the island's prettiest resort: low white houses trimmed in colour, bougainvillea, little bridges over canals between the marina and the fishing harbour, and a beach in a sheltered bay with calm, shallow water that's ideal for young children. The Friday market fills the streets and the harbour — arrive early. Boats run along the coast from Puerto Rico and Arguineguín, the most scenic way to arrive, and a real passenger submarine dives for around 40 minutes to 25 metres.
See our Puerto de Mogán guide and the Mogán submarine.
IV. Vegueta, Las Palmas and Las Canteras
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the largest city in the Canary Islands, and its historic quarter, Vegueta, dates from the city's founding in 1478: cobbled streets, the Cathedral of Santa Ana, whose tower you can climb, and the Casa de Colón, a museum on Columbus's voyages. Across town, Las Canteras is one of Europe's best city beaches, its northern and central sections sheltered by a natural reef, La Barra, so you can swim most of the year; the southern end, La Cícer, is the city's surf spot.
Global bus line 60 links the airport and the city in 30 to 40 minutes. Our Las Palmas city guide covers the neighbourhoods, Carnival and where to eat.
V. Dolphins, Boats and the South Coast
Cruises from Puerto Rico regularly see bottlenose and spotted dolphins; pilot whales and other species are possible but not guaranteed. Along the coast, the calm beach of Amadores is one of the best on the island for young children, and boats link Puerto Rico, Amadores and Mogán.
VI. The Green North
The north is greener and more local. Teror has one of the island's finest streets of wooden balconies around the Basilica of the Virgen del Pino; Agaete, in the north-west, has the natural pools of Las Salinas, carved from old lava, and is the port for fast ferries to Tenerife. Swim in the pools only when the sea is calm. Our hidden gems guide covers more.

Getting There and Around
By air, Gran Canaria Airport (LPA) is on the east coast, between Las Palmas and the southern resorts, with direct flights from most of Europe. By bus, Global line 60 runs to Las Palmas in 30 to 40 minutes, line 66 to San Agustín, Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, and line 91 to the south-west coast as far as Puerto Rico. By taxi, expect around €30 to €35 to Las Palmas and €45 to €60 to Maspalomas; there's no Uber on the island as of October 2026.
By car, the GC-1 motorway runs down the east and south coasts; the mountain roads to Tejeda and Roque Nublo are slow and winding. Since January 2026, cars in Spain carry a V-16 emergency beacon instead of warning triangles — check it's in your rental. By sea, fast ferries from Agaete reach Santa Cruz de Tenerife in about 1 hour 20 minutes. Our getting around Gran Canaria guide has routes and fares.
Practical Tips
Reserve Roque Nublo
The free reservation is needed between 9:00 and 17:00, and slots are limited per hour. Book before you drive up.
Two Climates
The south is sunny and dry; the north and the mountains are cooler and cloudier. Pack a layer for the interior.
Dune Rules
Stay on the marked paths in Maspalomas, and avoid the midday heat on the sand in summer.
Sea Safety
Swim in natural pools only when the sea is calm, and respect the flags on open beaches.
Market Days
Puerto de Mogán's market is on Fridays — lively, but parking fills early.
Staying Connected
A Yesim eSIM keeps your Roque Nublo QR code, maps and bookings on your phone.

Final Verdict
Base yourself in the south for sun and beaches — Meloneras or Maspalomas for resorts, Mogán for charm — or split your stay with a few nights in Las Palmas. Give a day to the mountains, reserving Roque Nublo in advance, spend a morning in the dunes at sunrise, and take a boat along the south coast. With a car for the interior and the north, you'll see why Gran Canaria earns its "continent in miniature" name.
